Promoting Quality and Access to No-Cost Tax Return Preparation: Why Philanthropic Investment Matters Now

The Tax Equity Funders Network and Prosperity Now hosted a discussion with experts, practitioners, and philanthropic leaders on recent changes in the no-cost tax return preparation landscape and how philanthropic foundations can support grantees through Prosperity Now’s Tax Opportunity Network (TON).

As no-cost tax preparation options face growing strain, individuals and families who rely on these services may be at increased risk of missing refunds and tax credits they qualify for. Changes in IRS capacity and the availability of tools such as Direct File have placed additional pressure on the no-cost tax filing landscape.

This webinar explored why no-cost, high-quality tax return preparation services — including VITA — remain essential, and how philanthropic investment can help sustain and strengthen this infrastructure. Participants will learn how the collective efforts of the TON support service quality, expand access to no-cost tax return preparation, and help reduce exposure to costly errors and high-risk alternatives.
