Low-and moderate-income families spend precious time and money filing their taxes each year. This year, IRS’s Direct File pilot aimed to test if building a free, easy-to-use filing tool would improve the tax-time experience and save taxpayers money and time. With the 2024 tax season concluded, it is clear that the Direct File pilot was a major success.
- Over 140,000 taxpayers used the tool across the 12 pilot states saving
- Taxpayers used Direct File to claim over $90 million in tax refunds and save $5.6 million in estimated filing fees.
- 90 percent of surveyed users rating their experience positively and 86 percent saying their experience with the tool increased their trust in the IRS.
These incredible results were made possible by a substantial investment in federal resources from the Inflation Reduction Action, targeted resources from philanthropy, deep dedication on the part of US Treasury and creative, innovative strategically coordinated outreach and engagement work by field partners.
